How to Document Your Claim
|
|
One of the most important things you should do after a loss is to document your claim.
Pictures are the most highly recommended way of documenting your damages. When it is time to present the claim, your pictures could make the difference between getting paid or not.
Note: Make sure you don’t give original copy of your pictures to anyone unless you have a copy.
Keep the pictures in certain order. As a rule, if there is exterior damage to the structure, start outside and then photograph the interior. Take a lot of pictures (50 -100 pictures per average size claim is common).
The system is simple, take a general picture and then zoom in and take a picture that focuses on the damage. Either one of the pictures by itself in most cases would not be good enough. It is important to show the damage in the picture. The different angels of the pictures show exactly where the damage occurred.
When photographing the interior, start in the most damaged area, if you can point to the source of the claim start from there. Example: If it is a plumbing leak claim, show the damaged pipe and go from there. Work your way from room to room by its location so the pictures flow.
If there are content items in the room, you should photograph them as well. The same principal applies here: One general picture of the item and then zoom in to show the damage up close.

You would need to prepare an inventory list of your damaged content items, as well. |
