- Always take plenty of pictures and make sure they
show the damage.
- Never give away any part of your claim or original
documentation (pictures and invoices) Make sure to make a photocopy. Make sure you only give away photocopies.
- Find out if you need a public adjuster's help early.
- Always hire your own contractors and service
providers.
- Do not pay ANYONE any money upfront. Your deductibles will be subtracted from the settlement totals.
- Never sign a release which calls for the contractor to
be satisfied with the amount of the insurance settlement.
- Always get a written, detailed estimate from a contractor with the scope of the work and the amount they are going to charge.
- Always check the records and referrals of the company you hire.
- Do not rush with the repairs. It will be smart to complete only the required repairs, and wait with the rest until the settlement of the claim.
- Do not hurry to settle your claim. Damages overlooked in an early inspection may become apparent later.
